What’s the difference between Z and telescoping brackets? Z-brackets are rigid and fine for small indoor mirrors. Telescoping brackets have an adjustable arm that gives the mirror play in wind — mandatory for outdoor use and strongly recommended for 18″+.
Does acrylic yellow in the sun? Our acrylic is UV-stabilized. Unlike low-grade imported mirrors, it will not haze or yellow over normal outdoor life.

A convex mirror is a curved mirror that bulges outward, away from the observer. Unlike a flat mirror, which reflects light in a straight line, a convex mirror reflects light outwards. This causes the image formed by a convex mirror to be virtual, smaller, and upright compared to the actual object.
The way a convex mirror works is through a phenomenon called "divergence." When light rays hit the surface of a convex mirror, they spread out or diverge. This divergence creates the illusion of an image being formed behind the mirror. The further you are from the convex mirror, the larger convex mirror is a curved mirror that bulges outward. It works by reflecting light outwards, causing the image to appear smaller and wider than it is. This type of mirror is commonly used for surveillance purposes as it provides a wide field of view.

The indoor convex mirror with acrylic lens and hardboard backing is the go-to workhorse for indoor security mirrors. The acrylic lens is lighter in weight (when compared to glass) and offers a brighter reflection than glass and polycarbonate. Although it can scratch, there are polishes you can use to buff it out. This polycarbonate convex mirror stands to impacts, practically does not break, has excellent reflection properties and does not scratch easily. A special aluminum profile applied around the mirror offers increased strength and durability. Can be used both indoors and outdoors.
The hardboard backing is excellent for indoor use (not recommended for outdoor use). There are two mounting brackets; a z-bracket and a telescoping bracket. The primary benefit of the hardboard backing in a convex acrylic mirror is to provide the mounting brackets and to protect the mirror lens itself. However, the pressed hardboard backing does not do well in humid, wet weather. If you plan to mount the mirror in a location where humidity, moisture, or extreme temperatures are an issue, we recommend the outdoor convex mirror with heavy-duty plastic backing.
When considering purchasing a mirror, it is important to note that they come in various sizes, ranging from 12 inches to 48 inches. As a general rule, for every inch in mirror size, you can expect approximately one foot of viewing distance. This is a conservative number and factors such as overall distance, how fast objects are moving, and if the oncoming intersections provide a straight or curved field of view.
