180° Half Dome Security Mirror - Acrylic Safety Mirror description & specifications

Half dome mirrors at National Safety Mirror are great for blind-spot elimination and to prevent traffic accidents in your office, warehouse, or shop. Half dome mirrors provide a 180-degree view and mount at the intersection of a wall and ceiling.

The image below is a good example of how a half-dome mirror may be used in an office, warehouse, or parking garage mirror to avoid accidents. What you can see in this mirror is how office hallways intersect with each other. For example, someone walking up the center hallway towards the intersection can see oncoming traffic.

You can also see how this half-dome mirror is mounted flush against the ceiling. Although dome mirrors are available with hardboard, heavy-duty plastic, and galvanized steel options, there's no need to have backing when mounting indoors. The hardboard backing is a good choice if you want a backing for an indoor 180-degree dome mirror.

If this mirror is going in a parking garage where water or moisture could leak into the mirror, we recommend the HDPE (high-density polyethylene) heavy-duty plastic backing. This plastic is 1/8'' thick, lightweight, and virtually indestructible.

Acrylic Half Dome Mirrors

These mirrors are constructed from Acrylic, the usual "go-to" for indoor safety and security mirrors. Acrylic offers a bright reflection and is roughly 17 times more impact-resistant than glass.

If you want an outdoor equivalent for the half dome mirror to place outdoors, we recommend the new "DomeVex Security Mirror."

Mounting a Half Dome Mirror

Half-dome mirrors without backing are mounted using the predrilled holes located on the outer flange of the mirror. For mirrors with backings, use the d-rings installed on the backing. The image below offers two examples, but please review our document on mounting dome mirrors for more details.

Half-dome mirrors without a back are designed for easy installation. They come with predrilled holes located on the outer flange of the mirror. These holes are strategically placed to facilitate a secure and straightforward mounting process. To install these mirrors, you align the holes on the flange with the corresponding points on the mounting surface, then screw or bolt the mirror into place.

In contrast, half-dome mirrors that come with backings typically include d-rings. These d-rings are pre-installed on the back of the mirror. To install these mirrors, you must attach these d-rings to the corresponding points on your mounting surface. This could be achieved using screws, bolts, or other appropriate fasteners.

The image provided below provides visual examples of both these mounting methods. The first example shows a half-dome mirror without a backing installed using the predrilled holes on the outer flange of the mirror. The second example illustrates a half-dome mirror with a backing installed using the d-rings.

These are just summaries of the installation process for half-dome mirrors with and without backings. We strongly recommend reviewing our comprehensive document on mounting dome mirrors for more detailed instructions and tips. This document provides in-depth information, including necessary tools, safety precautions, and step-by-step instructions to ensure a successful installation.

FAQ

What is the difference between full dome, half dome, and quarter dome mirrors?

Full domes provide near 360-degree overhead visibility and are used above open areas or four-way intersections. Half domes are useful at T-intersections or wall-adjacent areas. Quarter domes fit corners and L-shaped corridor intersections.

How are half dome and quarter dome mirrors mounted?

Half dome and quarter dome mirrors usually mount to walls, ceilings, or corners through pre-drilled rim holes or d-loop rings on backed versions. Install them into solid material or appropriate anchors at a height that gives pedestrians and equipment operators a clear view.

Why does my quarter dome mirror look smaller than the size I ordered?

A quarter dome uses the radius of the original full dome as its straight-edge measurement. For example, a 32 inch quarter dome will have straight edges of about 16 inches because it is one quarter of a 32 inch full dome.

When should I use a full dome mirror instead of a convex mirror?

Use a full dome when people, carts, forklifts, or customers approach from multiple directions and overhead panoramic visibility is needed. Use a wall-mounted convex mirror when the primary need is one or two approach directions around a corner or obstruction.
